I am also concerned about the cost and complexity of continuing to carry forward 3.x compatibility given the major A-Z differences. I fear that it will make the code harder to understand, maintain, and debug. One of the nice things about BackupPC is that the code is relatively simple and understandable allowing others to productively interact with the code.
