As you probably should know, BackupPC_dump does not have an X11 interface.
This problem can only be an artefact of your debugging attempts.

Presuming your priority is the backup *contents* and not statistics about the
*progress*, forget about using a signal handler forever.

I'm not really sure why you're asking this on <backuppc-devel>.
