OK.  I put in the disclaimer because I only read up on rsync -- I
didn't have the energy to check all the other transfer methods.

Perhaps.  As a user, however, I'd vastly prefer a configuration
language that would abstract away all the varying details so that

  1. I do not have to read the manpage for tar or rsync or smb, and
  2. the set of files included/excluded does not change if I change transfer method.

I can't tell from the current docs whether #2 is really an issue or
not but there are notes in there "for tar" and "for smbclient" so I am
wary.
