Not sure I want to try that if it's not recommended but, if I did, how 
would I go about finding and deleting the files given that the historic 
guidance is now obsolete?

OK, thanks. Would deleting all backups that included/referenced the 
files cause them to be cleaned out of the pool (and the space recovered) 
automatically, or is there a further step?
