That's what I did more than five years ago, too - but we didn't use 
samba client for Windows backups with BackupPC, but this:

and I remember it working very well. Especially that it did
use shadow copies. I think we used Win10 these days.

But later we switched to Urbackup client.

If you don't have recent Windows versions at hand ...
Usually it is possible to get some Windows developer edition VMs.

Maybe some newer fixes are in the forks or pull requests like:
