As you're sure it's not a memory issue then my first guess is that an rsync process is 'defunct'. I see this a lot when I'm developing rsync-bpc. Does you have the 'top' utility and do you ever see it flagging a process as defunct? If I'm right then I think it's likely that you're triggering an error which is not being handled properly by rsync-bpc, or possibly by BackupPC-XS. In the past week or two I've pushed fixes for a couple of issues which can cause this sort of thing.
