On SPARC the Oracle Solaris Developer Studio Compilers generate much 
better code than GCC/G++[1].

We also prefer to use it - paying for licences and updates - and using a 
less effective compiler is not something we are happy about[2].

It's not difficult to write portable C/C++, but too many people these 
days think "portable" means "compiles on Ubuntu *and* Fedora Core", 
which is just saying an orange is an orange.

1 - This used to be the other way around, but that was long ago when SUN 
machines were the primary development systems for such things.  :-)

2 - Nor are our customers - but they aren't impacted by Bacula, that's 
about the software we develop.  ;-)
