I just wanted to let everyone know about a great discussion on increasing the maximum slice size...

I have installed from RPM and uninstalled, then installed from the tarball, but I did not edit the Makefile setting:
FILEOFFSET = -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 

By following the instructions you gave in the discussion, it should be easy for users to enable slices larger than 2 GB.

My question is, what should I do now that I have installed Dar using the default tarball?  (Is there an easy way to uninstall a program that was installed from a tarball?)

For what I know each filesystem usually implies a limit of the files 
size, for the current specification of ext2/3 filesystem, the limit is 
probably over the terabyte, then the implementation in the kernel may 
also imply a limit, Linux version 2.2.x had a limit around 2GB, if I 
still don't make any mistake. Last the compilation options used to build 
dar (check largefile sypport with `dar -V' ) affect the way file are 
handled. I don't know the ReiserFS,thus I can't tell you what the 
maximum size it can handle, nor I can speak about its implementation in 
the Linux kernel.

Just a trick, if you cannot have as larger files as you want, you still 
may use slice size which are an exact divisor of the destination 
storage. Suppose you want to save you data over DVD-R of, let's say, 11 
GB each, but cannot overcome the 2GB limit for any reason, you can 
choose a slice size of 1GB, this will allow you to put 11 slices per 
DVD-R, and thus fullfil each DVD-R.
