thank you for the note on the dar-news mailing-list.

About your Icon issue:
Currently gdar is using the icons provided by gtk. 
My be I will ship the icons my self later.
But for now it seams like some icons are provided within the package:
gnome-icon-theme-symbolic
you can install it without any gnome dependencies.

I hope this solves your problem.
