Test I did: Using a database with read-only access:

I ran each of these without any problem:
   dar_manager -B mybase -f home/denis/.ssh/id_rsa
   dar_manager -ai -B mybase -f home/denis/.ssh/id_rsa
   dar_manager -B mybase -f home/denis/.ssh/id_rsa -ai

Thus, I could not reproduce the problem you met, which version of
dar_manager/libdar are you using?
