Compression method recommendations?

Hi all,

I couldn't find any decent list/table online. So either I can't search properly 
or it doesn't actually exist (yet).

I do hope someone has some decent recommendations for which compression 
method(s) to use for the following situations:

1) Large collection of text-files (maildirs)
2) Large collection of binary files (videos/music)
3) Combination of both

What I'm mostly looking for is a good trade-off between speed and compression 
level, but I don't have the time to try every single option on my datasets to 
see which performs best.

Anyone have any good suggestions?
