Besides better reproducing the original data on the disk during a restore it's recommended for system backups per the GNU docs for tar: http://www.gnu.org/software/tar/manual/html_node/tar_121.html At present I don't _need_ it but it sounds like a good idea. Until recently I wasn't aware that tar even had the option -- I'd been under the impression only commercial backup packages handled files with holes cleanly.
