One other thing I still need to test is how tar actual handles
the --files-from and --listed-incremental stuff combined [*]. Old
tar version didn't handle that correctly. If tar still fails to 
handle this I'm probably forced to write my own tar implementation
(and I really don't want to do that) or switch to star,
