Only reason I haven't gone for rdup is that it isn't in the Ubuntu 
repos. However, I do see now, that Ubuntu packages are available, so I 
might go for it in the near future.

And my insecurity as to whether star works was only, that the (now 
unsupported, as I am now aware) hdup utility works best with a patched 
tar, with an assumption that the patched tar's functionality is present 
in star.
