Not that I can think of, apart from actually running sslserver under a
debugger or adding printf's to get more details about what's going on.

It would be interesting to see whether this problem is caused by the
TLS patches, or whether it's present in the unmodified sslserver.
That would be a really useful test to see the results of; if it's a
problem in unmodified sslserver, the mailing list for that software
should be able to help out.
