If your shell didn't support any functions, the tests would totally and
completely break. I suspect there is something else at play here.

I just put in a fix for this. My scripts included the use of brace
expansion (mkdir $tmp/Maildir/{cur,new,tmp}) which isn't portable.

Yes. ash is NetBSD's lightweight bourne shell.
