Beyond or *in* your mailserver. Corrupting an attachment is a Bad
Thing for a mailserver to do...

strace is a linux tool. You have BSD, it seems.

The source code will tell you what 0x106 means. As someone has pointed 
out, you have some shell variables which you need to export.
