I did try the envdir method, but with the exact same values in the variables the envdir method fails to start with the following error: #v+ cvm-chain: Error: Could not bind socket: No such file or directory #v- However, I'll look into this later. I've got functional chainage, and now plan to replace my overly patched qmail-smtpd with mailfront.
