Hello,

I guess that even font rendering based on Freetype will work in this case as XMBC translate characters to HD44780 encoding - something that I have not found any character encoding for use with Freetype up to now.

XMBC should be modified to not translate any characters first.

If you absolutely want german umlauts and know the characters XMBC replaces you can 'remap' them again on your own by swapping those character definitions in server/driver/imonlcd_font.h which is well documented and contains german umlauts.
