Well, yes.  I compiled as my ordinary user, within my ordinary 
(non-root) home directory.  I just ran "make install" as root as the 
installation required write permissions within /usr.

I've just tried running the lcdproc executable locally from the build 
folder (ie, with non-root user owner and group).

I also tried loading the server from the local build directory, as a 
normal user.

Unfortunately, I still need to run lcdproc as root.

I am about to download and build 0.5.4, or maybe CVS, and see what happens.
