I have a hd44780 compatible device that uses the ftdi interface for USB to serial conversion running on FreeBSD 8.2.

It creates /dev/cuaU0 that works for me to access it. Note the capital 'U' instead of the normal system supplied /dev/cuau0 device.

> Thanks for all the help so far. I have now downloaded and installed FreeBSD 9.0 so I believe I should now have the drivers for the Pyramid LCD. When I run the LDCd process I'm still getting the same errors. I still have /dev/ugen6.2 as my device under the Pyramid driver section in the LCDd.conf file. Is this the correct device or should it be something else - you did mention something about treating it as a serial device. I noticed something in the boot up trace about the KBS LCD display being linked with a device ufdti10.0 or something like that but do not see anything like this in /dev.
