RE: Calculating events per sec

I did some planning for our SIM installation and used a combination of
approaches. First, I used an EPS calculator I found at a SIM vendor web
site. I modified the results based on the events I knew were happening
on average per each device. Next, I developed a spreadsheet where I
multiplied the device eps times an average log record length based on
what I had seen in the past. Using this approach I was able to gestimate
what size disk array I would need to keep all the logs on line for a
year. I then doubled the array size as a precaution.

I then ran these numbers past a sales engineer who said my numbers were
high for our environment.

After installing the SIM equipment and running it for a few months, it
does look like my original estimates may be a little high, but I am
still adding devices.

On reflection, you could get a fair idea by looking at the log file time
stamps (date created and date modified), number of records in the log
file and file size. You could then look for peak times and see how many
log records were generated during those times.

I am working on putting together a SIMs package and one bit of info. I
need
is to calculate the events per second we expect to get.  I don't know if
there is well known formula for this but I didn't find one in my
research.
