Killing thread: Cross-Platform Log Analysis and Microsoft

Okay everyone, I'm killing this poor suffering thread. Whatever anyone else
at Microsoft thinks about syslog support, Eric's been on *this* list for
years, and he's highly cognizant of both the desire for integrated syslog
support and the many reasons why admins in heterogeneous environments would
benefit.

There are several posts pending in the queue, most of which come down to
"Windows should do syslog, and here are the reasons," with varying levels of
civility. 

It seems to me that this (bad) decision was made so long ago in MS history
that it's likely far too late to change anyone's mind about it.

And, of course, we have third party applications which offer syslog support,
and are frequently combined with other useful alerting and management tools,
so it's not like the problem of integration itself is impossible.

I'm pessimistic (ha - that's polite) that Microsoft will change its position
in this regard. But if you'd like to pressure them, talk to your account
manager. It's not the folks on a syslog-focused mailing list who will make a
difference - it will take lots of demand from large customers.

Anyone wanting to return to less-contentious and more technical aspects of
the subject -- never mind aspects which may actually be feasible today --
please feel free to do so. You'll make my life easier if you pick a new
subject line.
