AS 400 Logs

Anyone know of a good reliable source of information on AS 400 logging capabilities and log messages? I need to monitor one of these and syslog and snmp aren't available. Please don't suggest any commercial apps. I found a truckload of those via Google. :) Any help would be appreciated.
