Yeah.

It could let preexisting archives lie unmodified on disk, but still be
processed in the favoured way by more mdoern pcp clients.  Trading I/O
for some processor time, yeah.  Could perhaps work around the SGI
PR1136 idiosyncracies of pmlogreduce, which still impede "pmwebd -I"
(multi-archive mode).
