I came across the metric "sample.scramble.bin" today, which should be
able to provide a definitive test case here such that the above (open
question re sorting) can be answered...

$ pminfo -tT sample.scramble.bin

sample.scramble.bin [Several constant instances, instances scrambled]
Help:
Like sample.bin, except
1. instances are missing with probability 0.33
2. order of the instances from pmFetch is random

Designed to help testing instance matching between pmFetch calls
for PCP clients.
