Recommendation for fail-safe modem config

Hi all,

I'm running hylafax 6.0.6 on a raspberry pi 2 with raspbian (jessie) using a 
trendnet tfm 561u usb fax modem (with conexant chipset CX93001-EIS_V0.2002-
V92). Overall I'm happy with the system however from time to time the modem 
seems to get into an inconsistent state during transmission where it keeps the 
line open and stops to respond to any command. Powercycling the modem seems to 
trigger a hangup however the modem still doesn't respond to commands sent to 
it. The only option to completely reset it seems to be to pull it out of the 
usb port and attach it afterwards again. Before looking into other options for 
resetting the modem I wondered whether I can somehow prevent the modem to get 
into this inconsistent state by tweaking the hylafax server config. Until today 
I disabled ECM because that gave me the best quality when testing with a 
remote fax machine. Now I enabled it hoping that this might improve the 
reliability of my setup. Does anyone have some other recommendation regarding 
fail-safe modem configuration?
