Hi Jens,

sorry to bother you. I have appended a shortened testcase showing the same 
problem and a log, with the irrelevant parts stripped. The problem is not 
connected to the extra packages.

As you can see the diphtongs cause errors during the second latex run. Using 
bibtex8 and using 8bit characters makes no difference.

The errors are:

As the bib file was manually edited and checked in emacs bibtex mode and as 
it works without hyperref[backref], it must trigger some error somewhere.
