Something like
 Author = "{\sort{Economist}{The Economist}}",
works for me.  The quotes are important.  The first field is where it
is sorted, the second is how it will appear.  They can be the same.
This also requires
@PREAMBLE{{\providecommand{\sort}[1]{}}}
at the top of your .bib.

You may also be able to do what you want by replacing the outside
braces (or both?) in your example with double quotes.
