Dear Maarten,

Thank you very much for this help.  It's done just the trick.  I'm not sure how to turn 
off the auto insertion of p.~ and pp.~ when oxford=true, which seems the obvious 
thing to do.

Now that that's working, I have a couple of other questions!

1. I'd like to be able to use the \citefield command to refer to some books, including 
those with multiple volumes, by their short titles when footnoting some reference to 
an edited text (medieval texts in my case).  For the books I used as an example 
above:

A. de Vog{\"u}e, {\em La R{\`e}gle de Saint Beno{\^\i}t}, 6 vols.,

I'd like to be able to cite it as {\em RB} <chapter and verse> when referring to the 
text of the Rule of St Benedict, and as De Vogue, {\em RB}, <volume and page 
numbers> when referring to the commentary.

Using \footnote{\citefield[<chapter, verse>]{shorttitle}{vogue:RB}.} Works to get RB 
<chapter, verse>, but it doesn't italicize the letters "RB".  A normal second citation of 
the whole work without \citefield gives the surname, shorttitle and page numbes just 
fine.

Where should I look in jox.bst (?) to change it so that \citefield will italicize a 
shorttitle in the same way that other footnotes will?

2. I have to divide my bibliography into sections, and I'm using the bibtopic package, 
which is finally going smoothly.  One of the sections is for printed editions of 
"primary sources", that is, sources that exist in manuscripts from the middle ages, 
and that have been edited.  Often, they're short enough to be edited in a large book 
with many other things.  So, if I want to cite them, the entry should look like an 
@INCOLLECTION book.  However, unlike articles in a collection, the title needs to be 
in italics, not in quotation marks.  It would seem that I could just define a new entry 
type that was identical to @INCOLLECTION, and tweak jox.bst to change this.  I would 
also need to make it so that there could be an author (or not), with the title followed 
by "edited by..." (I could probably use titleaddon for this).  Any thoughts?

example with author:

Benedict of Nursia, {\em Regula}, edited by J. Neufville in A. de Vogue, {\em La Regle 
de Saint Benoit}, 6 vols., (Paris: Les Editions du Cerf, 1971--2), I--III.

example with anonymous author:

{\em Regula  Magistri}, edited by A. de Vogue in Idem, {\em La Regle du Maitre}, 2 
vols. (Paris: Les Editions du Cerf, 1970).
