It did not happen with the version packaged with MikTeX in March; 
unfortunately I ran a MikTeX package update two hours ago so I can't 
tell which version it was. :(  I should have known better than to trust 
packaging...

Anyhow I think it should be possible to have archival entries without 
separate titles; I just hacked this into my custom jurabib.bst copy. BTW 
is there a good emacs mode for editing .bst files other than bst-mode.el 
0.2?

Other than what I've written already, which is either trivial or only 
related to layout), I would be able to get my work done with what is 
there already.

One (rather complicated, I'm afraid) extra suggestion of mine is 
grouping archival entries in the bibliography.  One problem with the 
present system is that the bibliography gets rather large if you have 
lots of archival documents;  it's rather common to avoid excessively 
large lists of archival documents by only specifying the archive names 
down to a certain level instead of listing every single document (at 
least in my own field).  While this is not 100% clean from a historian's 
point of view, it's convenient.

For demonstration let's say I quote a lot of documents from an archive 
with a signature depth of 4 and the signature format a.b.c.d.   Let's 
say on the "a" level, there are two sections, named a1 and a2; on the 
"a1.b" level there are 2 sections again, named a1.b1 and a1.b2 and so 
on.  The documents cited have the following signatures, all of which 
should appear in the footnotes:

a1.b1.c1.d1 "archname"
a1.b1.c1.d2 "archname"
a1.b1.c2.d1 "archname"
a1.b1.c2.d2 "archname"
a1.b2.c1.d1 "archname"
a1.b2.c1.d2 "archname"
a2.b3.c1.d1 "archname"

With the present system, all of these items would appear in the 
bibliography; if you cite large numbers of items, the bibliography gets 
large quickly, especially with longer archnames.  The idea is to group 
documents from a given level together under the name of the archive 
section they're from, so that the bibliography would look like this 
(grouping level 3)

a1.b1.c1 "C-level section name for a1.b1.c1"
a1.b1.c2 "C-level section name for a1.b1.c2"
a1.b2.c1 "C-level section name for a1.b2.c1"
a2.b3.c1 "C-level section name for a2.b3.c1"

Or with grouping level 1:

a1 "A-level section name for a1"
a2 "A-level section name for a2"

This would require adding BibTeX fields for the section names on the 
various levels to the individual @ARCHIVAL entries (something like 
sig1name etc.);  the grouping level could be specified with a global 
command.

For my own documents, I don't strictly need grouping at all because most 
of the variation is on the last level, where I can fake it using page 
numbers. I don't know how necessary it is to others.

Some authors use some kind of "customized grouping" - they only group 
some entries together and leave others ungrouped, depending on how many 
documents from the same section they have. Under this system, the 
bibliography would look like this:

a1.b1.c1 "a1.b1.c1 archive section name"
a1.b1.c2 "a1.b1.c2 archive section name"
a1.b2.c1.d1 "archname"
a1.b2.c1.d2 "archname"
a2.b3.c1.d1 "archname"

I suggested this to Matthias Steinbrink once, but he pointed out that 
this would be substantially more complicated; I guess this could only be 
done by specifying the grouping level for every single @ARCHIVAL entry - 
otherwise jurabib has no way of knowing how to group. Anyway this will 
lead to a large number of special cases and is of not much importance, 
as far as I can tell.
