unicode and jurabib?

I've been looking at jurabib, and have been very impressed by its
capabilities.
However, I was wondering if it is possible to use jurabib with unicode,
that is, using the European characters such as umlauts, and smart
quotes, etc. I have not been able to get jurabib to work properly when
I include such characters in the fields of my BibTeX records.
If possible, I would prefer, in my BibTeX database, not to convert
unicode characters back to legacy LaTeX workarounds, such as \"a, for
numerous reasons -- incompatibility with other databases, and headaches
in writing perl regex find/replace scripts, to name a couple.
A possible temporary solution might be to redefine unicode characters
into their LaTeX equivalents, if such a macro exists.
In any case, I would sincerely appreciate any suggestions.
Best,
Roger
PS. I run LaTeX on Mac OS X 10.3.8 and TeXShop with the following,
\RequirePackage[encapsulated]{CJK}
\RequirePackage{ucs}
\RequirePackage[utf8x]{inputenc}
Before long I hope to upgrade to XeTeX, which is unicode-based.
