Yes in jox.bst the comma is hard-wired in the style. You can see it by
looking the .bbl file that shows how your citations are formatted.
You have then two solutions :
1) Use the jurabib format. I've got a University of Pennsylvania Press
history book on my table. And it seems that you can get proper American
style citations with jurabib.bst
2) Tweak jox.bst, copy it in your working directory and open it with an
editor
go to line 80 where it is written :
output.state mid.sentence =
{ ", " * write$ }
change ", " to " " and save the file under a new name myjox.bst
Maybe the second solution has some unhappy side-effects.
