To answer in Karl's place:
The 1960 edition may be a very well-known book, so with an author-
year citation type "Fritz/Meyer 1960" may be obious to everyone, but
"Fritz/Meyer 2000" might not be (and may be misleading, since readers
might think that the citation points to a rather recent publication.
But probably Karl's answer is much easier: "Because my tutor wants it
this way".
I have some similar cases myself, where I cite a new printing of a
rather old book, and I do it the following way:
YEAR = {2000 [1960]},
which leads to a short citation "Fritz/Meyer 2000 [1960]"
With a author/year citation type, imho this is the only way to solve
the dilemma that Fritz/Meyer 2000 is misleading, but Fritz/Meyer 1960
is wrong.
