That they must have a color profile embedded or at least defined, if 
it’s a standard profile like sRGB. Only this way the colors are defined 
in the L*a*b color space and can be converted reliably.

Profiled RGB images are usually a better source (in a properly 
configured color management workflow) than CMYK images, even profiled 
ones. There are exceptions, if you want to define fixed CMYK values 
regardless of the output device or if you want to control the method of 
color conversion (black composition via GCR or UCR…).
