\verticalbox is a wrapper for \vbox where you can pass box options as 
key-val parameter because it looks (in my opinion) nicer in a document 
style compared to

\vbox to {2lh-1sd} yoffset -3\nextboxdp \bgroup
   \vss
   \hbox{\useMPgraphic{letter_w}}
\egroup
