Basically, the same direction.

I would   rather say that it   is  already a fork    and the merge never
happened. I  won't take over  Olaf's  work, rather  follow  him and stay
compatible with web2c/kpathsea. However the  rest of the stuff may vary,
especially the teTeX compatible one (fmtutil, updmap, etc.).
