I managed to install Eitan Gurari's TeX4ht system
(see homepage at http://www.cis.ohio-state.edu/~gurari/TeX4ht/mn.html)
and found that this is able to convert a LaTeX document to html including a 
css stylesheet which makes it useable for loading into MS Word (I think 
only Word2000 and up).
It converts the equations either to gif bitmaps or to MML (that is what you 
asked about).
For conversion to Word-compatible html, use the xwlatex script, for 
conversion to html+MML use the xhmlatex script.
These scripts are not contained in the installation package for DOS/Win, 
they must downloaded separately from the page

(I don't know whether they are contained in the Unix/source distribution).

Btw: conversion of equations to bitmaps goes via TeX->dvi - dvips - convert.
