I do not know how widely \charscalex is implemented (it showed up in  
RTF 1.6).  Nevertheless, I implemented '\,' and '\thinspace' as you  
proposed in r824.  Of course, Word still removes the \charscalex  
factor when resizing the fonts in a document and this trick fails as  
well.
