RE: abstract on title page with better format?

In my title page, I have

\title
\subtitle
\author
\institution

I want to have a short abstract on that page as well.

So I did like this

\institution

abstract text here

\begin{document}

But the abstract is centered.

Another question is that when I compiled to a ps file, the word "filter"
is fine, but transformed to pdf using
ps2pdf -dPDFsettings=/prepress file.ps file.pdf
or just ps2pdf file.ps

"filter" in pdf becomes to "fi lter". Same thing happens to "define",
which becomes to "defi ne". This happens after command \item , not to,
e.g. in the abstract. But I did not have this problem at all before!

Thanks for any help.
