Indeed, but you mentioned already a couple of ideas that might be successfull (depending on the application). I think that onlyInPS could be used for this, but that might have other implications (coming from prosper) as well. Maybe it is a better idea to make a switch yourself: \newif\ifHandOut and use that to write the slides. Just an idea...
