itemstep

I am pretty new to prosper, and have put together a set of slides, using
just the basics. I did however want to use itemstep, but did not manage
to. All I got was a blank space there.
I believe it is somehow done with overlays (which I don't quite understand),
but what I tried gave me a mess - several succeeding slides, or bits of
them, overlapping.
So, could someone give me a simple, complete example of, say, a single
slide with a few items, using itemstep, please?
