There are two problems I am having:

1. as you pointed out the .eps does not look sharp. I tried to convert
using gimp or imagemagick, but both produce an unsharp .eps!
The original image is perfect:

Possibly I am having a problem with my gs:
ESP Ghostscript 7.07.1 (2003-07-12)

2. when I include a .eps in my presentation, it looks (even) much
worse (the white background becomes semi-yellow) => see the pdf:

because of a white rectangle I get.
