Re: TeXLive and dist-upgrades of Debian Stable

Hi.
Thanks to Karl Berry, Andreas Hirsch, Max Chernoff and Norbert Chernoff for taking out time to answer my questions.

I have successfully installed TL 2025. Also added the PATH, INFO and MAN related codes in ~/.profile.

tex -version 

gave the right output as TeX Live 2025 something..

when I tried tlmgr update -self

I got a reply:
(running on Debian, switching to user mode!)
TLPDB: not a directory, not loading: /root/texmf
tlmgr: user mode not initialized, please read the documentation!

README.tlmgr-on-Debian.md says that it is not recommended to initialize user mode.
"Integrating vanilla TeX Live with Debian" in https://wiki.debian.org/TeXLive is a bit too scary. The last thing I wish to see is a broken Debian system necessitating a reinstall. 
 
Few questions:
1. I am a bit confused how to go ahead if I wish to update this TL 2025.
2. If I want to use my home directory (since I am the only user) will that result in any complication in future TeXLive upgrades? Is it better to install in the default /usr/local? 
3. I read through the documentation. Somehow couldn't figure out how to switch between my old TeXLive and this one.
