which I updated after working for some time on integrating a couple
Nelson's utilities.

In short, Automake per se is indeed not required, but what is required
is VPATH support, and Nelson's Makefiles don't have it. He said he would
work on that, though, as always, he has ten zillion projects going on,
so there's no ETA. I doubt the situation will change before Feb 1,
when I hope to start doing test builds. --best, karl.
