Thanks.  Especially in light of my awful sentence construction!

Caution and discretion are good.  However, if someone asks a question in a
public forum, that seems to me to be implied permission to respond publicly
in that same forum.

Contrariwise, if person XYZ privately emails me a question about subject
ABC, I would not go to the ABC mailing list / newsgroup / ... and say
"Hey everyone, XYZ asked this question: '...'".
