Here is a test matrix for a considerable paper at arXiv, all images
are not fast copy confirm (sRGB, alpha, palette, wild mixture).
I run pdflatex, xelatex, lualatex before and after converting images
to a compatible format, here are the timings:

              slow images          fast images
pdflatex        2m24.231s            0m3.129s
xelatex         1m30.492s            1m35.481s
lualatex        1m12.247s            0m4.004s

So pdflatex and lualatex behave the same way, wiht lualatex being faster
on slow images (maybe it supports palettes?).

xelatest is the same with slow/fast images, faster than pdflatex on slow
images.
