About automatic creation of .pdf from .png files: I'm thinking of adding it as 
a built-in feature for latexmk.  (It would be user configurable as to whether 
the automatic conversion is used.)  Just now, I've worked out a user 
configuration that works with the current version, and I'm tempted to 
incorporate this internally in the next release.
