I am very far from an expert here, but my understanding is that you are 
right and it still mostly does work to treat one as the other--providing 
you are compiling things from scratch (which config.guess is mostly used 
for in other places, right?).

I don't know, I'm afraid. But as I think I mentioned in another message, 
OmniOS does provide a TL installation, so presumably there's *some* use.
