Ann Cowling, You are getting various suggestions. Before you act, it is important to understand what you will have at the very end of the process. My advice is to first install macOS 13, Ventura. If you are at a University, the University people should easily help do this. Then you will have a Macintosh running a system that is only three years older than the very latest version of macOS. After that, install MacTeX. This will give you a TeX system that is COMPLETELY UP TO DATE as of this moment. Moreover, all configuration will be done for you, so you'll be ready to go. Your machine will run the very latest stuff from TUG. The advice from others does not suggest updating macOS first. Then you will be running a computer that is 9 years old. Since that machine has not been updated, it is too old to run the latest version of TeX, so you will get an older version of TeX, and therefore (for instance) a version of TeX which cannot support tagging. ---------------- It may look like there are just various ways to update your computer. The "update macOS first" method gives you essentially the latest version of TeX. The other methods give you older, and sometimes VERY OLD, versions of TeX. Dick Koch
